The problem

Why most runners
drop out before race day

It's not lack of motivation. Research consistently shows four avoidable reasons that derail runners every year.

01
Training load errors
Rapid increases in mileage or intensity exceed the body's capacity to adapt — the leading cause of overuse injury.
02
Biomechanical inefficiencies
Altered movement patterns place excessive stress on specific tissues. Often invisible to the runner until pain begins.
03
Inadequate strength
Weakness in the gluteals and calf complex is directly linked to IT band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, and knee pain.
04
Poor recovery strategies
Without structured recovery, cumulative fatigue compounds into overload — often misread as "needing to push harder."

The good news: all four are preventable with early assessment and targeted intervention.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Not at all — in fact, the ideal time to come is before you're injured. Our Running MOT is a preventive assessment designed to identify risk factors before they become problems. The earlier you come, the more we can protect your training.
Ideally 8–12 weeks before your event to allow time to act on the recommendations. However, even 4 weeks out is beneficial — we can still make meaningful improvements to your preparation and reduce your risk significantly.
Comfortable running kit and your usual running shoes. We'll want to observe your movement patterns and may ask you to perform some light running or functional movements during the assessment.
The physiotherapy consultation element may be covered by your health insurance — we recommend checking with your insurer. We are registered with most major providers. Call us on 020 3334 8985 to discuss your cover.
The Running Clinic is available at all four of our locations: Forest Hill, Kingston upon Thames, Wallington (South London), and Epsom. All clinics offer Monday–Friday 8am–8pm and weekend appointments.
